What is it?
An award for seniors from the Maryland State Board of Education that recognizes a student’s high level of proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English and one or more languages.
- Evidence for students, employers and universities of a student’s readiness for career and college, and for engagement as a global citizen
- Award becomes part of a student's official high school transcript
- Recognition as Seniors through Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Certificates of Achievement
- Recognition as Seniors in graduation programs and Seal of Biliteracy medals worn at graduation if eligibility is completed by late April of graduating year)
- Recognition as Seniors at the award ceremony at the May WCPS Board of Education
- Recognition as Seniors at the WHHS Senior Awards night.
The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy exists to recognize the value of language learning, encourage students to attain high proficiency levels in one or more languages., affirm native or heritage languages, provide employers and colleges with a method of identifying individuals with biliteracy skills, prepare students with the critical skills necessary to function in a global society and affirm the value of diversity in our community.
How can students earn the seal?
WHS students enrolled in their World Language class (French, German, or Spanish) must pass the English 10 PARCC assessment AND pass an MSDE ACTFL approved world language assessment such as AP or STAMP. Students must earn a minimum of a 4 on the AP exam or a minimum intermediate high proficiency (a score of 6) on the STAMP exam As part of the curriculum, STAMP is available to WCPS students for free in level III and higher world language courses.
*While medals and certificates will only be awarded to seniors during their senior years who have earned the seal, students can earn the seal BEFORE senior year.*
